This month’s motivational quote is about achieving your dreams by setting goals for yourself. As mentioned last month, my granddaughter is helping me with motivational quotes for each month. Not only does she come up with the motivational quote, but she also selects the photos to illustrate the quote! That is Sami holding the pizza tray that she added text to after we transferred the photo from my camera to my computer to illustrate this month’s motivational quote: Karma has no menu, you get served what you deserve.
I thought I would use the quote that she provided this month to show you how to realize your dreams. You are in control of your dreams. Why not adjust your life so that you can revise what you deserve to be served.
What you do today is very important because whatever you do today will eventually be your past! You can control what people will say about you in 5 years or 10 years or longer by what you do today. Today is important! Another way to phrase that is the vehicle of life has no reverse. You can never re-live today again. Therefore, make the best of every minute in your life. Rather than wishing things were different, use today to MAKE them better. Decide what you want to be doing in 5 years or 10 years and then write down those ideas (which are goals).
Try this task:
- Create a table on the computer or on paper that has 5 rows and 4 columns
- Write the last 5 years: 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014.
- Next to each year, write the most important event that happened in that year.
- Enter the percentage of control that you had over those events
What the table illustrates is that 3 out of 5 events, this person had almost total control!
Think about the proverb that was said by Chinese philosopher Laozi: “A trip of 1,000 miles begins with one step”. In order to complete the trip, you have to start the trip.
You have an enormous amount of control over what you will be doing in 5 or 10 or more years by what steps you take today.
Instead of wishing things were different in your life, do something about it today. Everyone accomplishes things in different ways. I will provide several suggestions; however, you need to find ways that feel good to you so that you will stick with it. When you find a way that you will stick with complete at least one step every day or 3-4 steps every week, you will be in control of determining your future.
Please review this PowerPoint presentation that my son provided to the staff of his company about 8-9 years ago that showed everyone how to set goals to be able to accomplish their dreams. The presentation is 12 slides long and is an excellent overview of how to create goals that will help you realize your dreams: Goal Setting
You will need to find a way that feels good to you or that you will enjoy doing so much that you will make time to complete at least one of the steps involved in reaching your goals. When you create a goal, your next step will be to decide what needs to be done in order for you to achieve the goal. Use as many stepping stones as you need to keep you motivated.
One more thing that I suggest to people who ask for my help is to reward yourself for every goal that you complete. Each goal will have a variety of steps that will help you reach the goal. No cheating. Only reward yourself when you complete the goal.
Below is an example that I am using for one of my goals.
Set task reminders for yourself quarterly to check with how well you have done. Keep in mind that every day in your life, you have new opportunities to bring you one step closer to realizing your dream. To keep yourself on goal, set a task reminder for every 3 months to review the steps that you completed toward completing a goal.
Much success in reaching your goals!
